Choosing your project CS619

Technology is an obsolete thing, probably second most obsolete thing ever. Things change quickly & the fast paced world we live in, there is a strong chance that very soon new technologies will be emerging within weeks, one after the other.
So what factors should you consider while choosing your Final Year Project?
If you have decided to make a career in technology or computers, then you have to work at a faster pace too. The Final Project you are going to choose now will be a major plus (or minus) in your CV when you enter the market as a professional. This project basically concludes your skills & knowledge you have gained so far. So make sure you know where you are heading & that the project you are choosing now is the reflection of what you would like to do in future.
There are two kinds of projects offered: Web-based applications & Desktop applications. The difference is that in web-based applications you learn a lot about web deployment & web designing etc. which is a plus in case you want to become a website designer or a web application developer later. We live in an age of internet, so I favour knowledge of web development & deployment e.g you learn a lot about different kinds of web servers, redirections, & there is lot to learn in that domain. You probably will not learn this when you choose the desktop application.
When you choose a project, do some research how many people are choosing it. More people you have to discuss it with, more you will learn. In Virtual University the biggest issue is there is minimum or no help at all. You do not want to isolate yourself when it comes to FYP trust me!
Read the description of each project and see its scope in terms of your career. Will it support you in your career when you enter market after graduation? will it be something you can proudly present in your CV? Is it something that can catch the eyes of the prospective employers? These are all the questions you should keep in your mind when you read & analyse the description of each of the offered projects.
Make sure you understand each & every point in the project before you choose it. There is usually no turning back once you have chosen the project.
If you want to do your own thing, your own proposed project, that is a big plus too in terms of creativity. But there is a minus to that as well. You will be all alone in that. You have to be sure you can pull it off well. Otherwise you will end up in the mess you yourself created.
Good luck & Success
